Did you know that...
They prefer to nest on human structures and live in the vicinity of people. In many folk tales, the stork is depicted as a bringer of happiness and new life. In the 1970s, the stork had all but disappeared from the Netherlands. Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers and together with the Bird Protection Society, this species was prevented from becoming extinct as a breeding bird in the Netherlands. They did this through a rescue program with stork stations. Fortunately, it is no longer on the Red List and the stork is doing very well.
